A Magical Fairy Garden Created by YOU!

By Jodi Lorence, Macaroni Kid Publisher April 18, 2017

The latest craze for the do it yourselfers is a fun and creative fairy garden. The ideas are endless and you can create with whatever supplies that interest you. You can find supplies at Home Depot, Bachman's, dollar stores, or even local hardware stores such as Beiswenger's. I found supplies at Mother Earth Gardens in St. Anthony too. You can spend as little or as MUCH as you want. I wanted to keep mine smaller so I used a basket with a plastic liner. Other good pot ideas are the base of a pot, a tray, a planter, the top of a birdbath, or anything else that you can come up with to house your fairy garden. You can choose themes for your fairy garden too. They have mythical creatures you can get for the fairy garden, both girl and boy fairy figurines, animals, homes for them, and they even have holiday themes so you can change them up with the season.

Supplies I used:

  • Gravel
  • Specialty plants for the fairy garden
  • A little home (that resembles an acorn)
  • Moss sheet cut to put under the house
  • Rocks
  • Birdhouse made from a painted acorn
  • Pond
  • Birdbath
  • Frog
  • Fairies (two girls sitting together, a boy fishing and a boy sitting on a rock)

Creating my Fairy Garden:

  1. Choose your base or container big enough to hold all the supplies you purchased and maybe room to add a few more things.
  2. I washed the gravel and rocks and let them dry.
  3. I then put the gravel base down. There is other mediums you can use (sand, shells, moss, rocks, some use dirt too if you are going to plant your flowers.
  4. I sank my pond down into the gravel once I decided where I wanted it to be.
  5. I placed my acorn home as the focal point. There are SO many choices but you could certainly make your own too.
  6. I cut a circular piece of the moss sheet to fit underneath my acorn home.
  7. Place the moss under the acorn home.
  8. I placed the 3 plants where I wanted them. These plants do not like to dry out. Make sure the dirt is damp to the touch. Because they are in a small pot you will have to water more regularly than if you planted them in a bigger pot of dirt.
  9. I placed my other little pieces where they looked the best.
  10. This project was so much fun and easy to do. Look around your house before shopping because you may find little items you already have that may look very nice in your fairy garden. This is a fun project to do with your kids! They love creating and pretending so what a perfect project to create together.
  11. Have fun!
