How Minnesotans Can Embrace Hygge

By Lisa Morgan December 26, 2024

Snow is coming today, and Minnesotans may have a white Christmas after all! It's best to embrace the cold facts and brace ourselves for the winter season upon us. The Danish do this best by embracing Hygge. Hygge is a Danish word for comfort, coziness, and creating an atmosphere of warmth. To sum it up, it’s about finding joy in simple pleasures, especially during our long, cold winter days and nights. Here’s how we can incorporate Hygge into our lives and homes:

  1. Enjoy Warm Drinks and Comfort Food
Minnesotans are known for their casseroles. Try an old family recipe or find a new spin on the classic tater tot hotdish. Create a fun hot cocoa bar with all the trimmings: crushed candy canes, whipped cream, sprinkles, or a drizzle of caramel.
  2. Create a Cozy Atmosphere at Home
Hygge begins in the home! Focus on soft lighting, candles, and creating an atmosphere of warmth. Add throw pillows and soft blankets to your furniture. Clean up clutter and enjoy your new, peaceful surroundings.
  3. Embrace the Outdoors
We all get a little cabin fever now and then. Hygge isn't just for indoors. Invite neighbors over for a bonfire and serve warm drinks and s'mores. Take a hike and have your children spot winter birds or new animal tracks. After spending time outdoors, cuddle up in your cozy home and enjoy a hot bowl of soup or your leftover casserole.
  4. Make Time for Self-Care
You need to fill your cup before you can fill others’. Hygge is also about taking care of yourself. Turn your bathroom into a spa by lighting candles, trying out a new bath bomb, or diving into a new book while taking a relaxing bath. Give yourself some time to rest and relax over the next few days.
  5. Prioritize Togetherness
The next couple of days will be filled with friends and family. Catch up with an old friend or long-distance relative. Use this time to create family memories by playing board games, putting together a puzzle, or encouraging your kids to read aloud to you.

While winter is just beginning here in Minnesota, Hygge is a way to make the best of it. I hope you all find joy in the coming days, and may your hearts be warmed by the comforts of family, good food and a cozy home.
